Learn About This Location
Webster is a city in Harris County, Texas, in the Houston metro area. Founded in 1879 by James W. Webster as Gardentown, it was established originally as a colony for settlers from England. Eventually railroads were built running through the area.
In 1903, the Houston Chamber of Commerce invited Seito Saibara to come to Texas to teach farmers how to grow rice, which at the time was an important cash crop. Saibara settled in the area and brought a small farming community of Japanese Christians, which became the foundation of the rice industry on the Gulf Coast.
In the 1960s the National Aeronautics and Space Administration built the Manned Spacecraft Center (now known as the Johnson Space Center) nearby, and development quickly ensued, and the town's population blossomed. Today, Webster is a bedroom community adjacent to the Clear Lake Area and its tech industry.
