Known for its port, Oakland is one of the largest cities in the Bay Area and home to corporations including Kaiser Permanente, Clorox and a host of technology firms. The Community of Oakland

More than 50 neighborhoods make up Oakland, including downtown, the Central Business District, Lake Merritt, the Oakland Hills and the East, West and North parts of the city. The hills in the northeast part of Oakland are home to the most prosperous residential areas.

The Cypress Freeway that divided the west from the rest of the city collapsed during the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, and was rebuilt in a different location. That allowed the west side of Oakland to become more desirable with more businesses, artists and revitalized residential areas. Efforts to diminish crime in this area have resulted in most neighborhoods being very safe.

What to Do in Oakland

Redwood Regional Park lets you escape the city in favor of towering redwood trees and extensive hiking and biking trails. Keep an eye out for golden eagles, deer and other wildlife. You can even reserve a camping spot or picnic area. On the west side of the park, make a stop at the Chabot Space & Science Center, a museum that features a hands-on learning area, two planetariums, telescopes and a theater as well as regular shows and exhibits.

More than 700 animals call the Oakland Zoo home, and it makes for an educational experience on conservation. The newly-opened California Trail area focuses on the changes to the ecosystem in the Bay Area and how plants, animals and humans co-exist. Take the tram up to the top of the hill to see more animals and exhibits.

One Place You Shouldn't Miss in Oakland

Named for the famous author, Jack London Square in downtown Oakland is a mixed-use area on the waterfront that features shopping, dining and a bit of history. London grew up, lived and wrote along the waterfront, frequenting Heinold's First and Last Chance Saloon. Nearby, a replica of the cabin he lived in stands for visitors to peruse.
