Cary is the seventh largest municipal area in North Carolina, straddling Wake and Chatham countie. Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill constitute the three primary cities of the Research Triangle region even though today Cary is the 3rd largest municipality. The regional nickname of "The Triangle" originated after the creation of the Research Triangle Park in 1959, primarily located in Durham County.
