About Zanesville, Ohio
Learn About This Location
Zanesville was named in honor of Ebenezer Zane (1747-1811), who built Zane's Trace, a early road from Wheeling, Virginia to Maysville, Kentucky. In 1797, Zane gave land as payment to his son-in-law, at the point where Zane's Trace reached the Muskingum River. WIn 1801, the town was officially Zanesville.
The city grew quickly in the 1820s through the 1850's. Novelist Zane Grey, a descendant of the Zane family, was born in the town.
