Roanoke is the largest city in Southwest Virginia, and had a population of 308,642 in 2010. Bisected by the Roanoke River, Roanoke is the commercial and cultural center of Southwest Virginia and parts of West Virginia. During the colonial era Roanoke was an important hub for trails and roads. The Roanoke Gap offered an easy route for immigrants to settle in the Carolina Piedmont region. The Wilderness Road continued from there southwest to Tennessee.
