About Los Angeles, California

Learn About This Location

About Los Angeles

Located between mountains and the ocean, Los Angeles offers so much to see and do that it's become the second largest city in the U.S., after New York. Not only does the City of Angels encompass much of the country's entertainment industry, but there are numerous other recreational, cultural and business opportunities within the area.

The Community of Los Angeles

As one of the most sprawling cities in America, Los Angeles has a wide range of ethnically diverse neighborhoods, including Chinatown, Little Tokyo, Little Ethiopia, Little Armenia and Thai Town. Because the number of neighborhoods is a bit overwhelming to the casual visitor, the city is broken up into regions, including Central, East, South and Western Los Angeles; Greater Hollywood; the San Fernando Valley; and Downtown. Downtown includes most of the business district.

What to Do in Los Angeles

There's no shortage of things to do in L.A. From amusement parks to sporting venues to high-end museums to nightlife, the city is packed with activities nearly any time of day.

The six buildings packed with works by famed artists, including Monet and Van Gogh, and several gardens of The Getty Center call to art aficionados and architecture fans. The views alone are worth the trip, but the rotating exhibits draw kudos even from non-art lovers for their high-quality curation. You won't pay for admission, but parking is $15.

Have you ever seen a space shuttle up close? If not, a stop by the California Science Center can let you cross that experience off your bucket list. The Science Center also houses numerous interactive exhibits, children's activities and an IMAX theater. Permanent galleries feature free admission, though you may pay for special exhibits.

Sometimes called a "theme park for grown-ups," The Grove is a high-end shopping area with beautiful water features, delicious restaurants and great opportunities for people watching. Peruse the high-end permanent stores and enjoy the oh-so-modern wares of the many pop-up shops mixed throughout this multi-use, outdoor space.

One Place You Shouldn't Miss in L.A.

The automobile had a huge impact in making L.A. -- and indeed, much of America -- what it is today. The Petersen Automotive Museum pays homage to the role of the car with four floors of historical exhibits and more than 150 rare vehicles, including motorcycles. The entire third floor is devoted to the science of autos in a way that will appeal to the whole family. Of course, you can also see Herbie, Lightning McQueen and a host of other famous vehicles. Tickets start at $16 for an adult.

Dining in Los Angeles

Providence stands out from the thousands of restaurants in the L.A. area and regularly receives awards and stellar reviews. You'll enjoy seasonal tasting menus tailored to the freshest available seafood, meats and produce, for between $100 and $240 per person. Get a cocktail in the funky bar area before you're seated for dinner. Food, wine and service are all top notch.

For something a little less expensive, stop by Brent's Delicatessen & Restaurant for a fantastic and authentic Jewish deli experience. Huge sandwiches and perfectly smoked meats are a treat for anyone; the pastrami and corned beef are especially popular.
