Learn About This Location

Topeka is the capital of Kansas and seat of Shawnee County. It's situated on the Kansas River in northeast Kansas. As of 2010, it had a population of 128,216.

The cit's name is a Kansa-Osage sentence that means "place where we dug potatoes". Topeka's founders chose the name because it "was novel, of Indian origin and euphonious of sound." The city was plotted in 1854, and was one of the Free-State towns founded by antislavery advocates. Topeka is well known for the U.S. Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education, which overturned Plessy vs. Ferguson and declared segregation in public schools as unconstitutional.
