Suffolk was founded in 1742 as a port settlement on the Nansemond River in the Virginia Colony. It was originally named Constant's Warehouse, after John Constant, but was renamed after Royal Governor William Gooch's home of Suffolk, a county in England. Indigenous tribes had lived in the region for thousands of years. At the time of settlement,  lived along the river. It became the county seat in 1750.
