About Chester, Virginia

Learn About This Location

Chester is located in Chesterfield County, and is encircled by the cities of Richmond, Petersburg, Hopewell and Colonial Heights. Lying between the James and Appomattox Rivers, Chester is rich in history and offers a wealth of outdoor activities.

Chester's original downtown was a stop on the Richmond and Petersburg Railroad. Chester today is a bedroom community along State Route 10. Recent commercial development in Chester has emerged at the sprawling intersection of SR 10 and U.S. Route 1.

Be sure to visit the R. Garland Dodd Park at Point of Rocks. This park features several athletic facilities and a lush natural area. Athletic and picnic areas lie toward the upper side of the park, and lower area access is provided by a system of trails including a floating boardwalk through a tidal marsh. This area also has historical significance, as it was the southern end of the Union position during the Bermuda Hundred Campaign-- Union earthworks can still be seen along the park's trails.
