About Kansas City, Missouri
Learn About This Location
Kansas City, or K.C., is the largest city in the state of Missouri. It was founded in the 1830s as a port on the Missouri River port. It was originally called Kansas after the river, which became confusing after the establishment of the Kansas Territory. The name Kansas City was then assigned to distinguish the two.
Lying on Missouri's western border, with its central business district near the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri Rivers, KC encompasses 319.03 square miles. The 18th and Vine area is the origin of Kansas City jazz and blues. Kansas City is also known for its particular style of barbecue, and historically, for the Border War that occurred during the Civil War. Suburbs include the Missouri cities of Independence and Lee's Summit and Overland Park, Olathe, and Kansas City in Kansas.
