About Muncie, Indiana

Learn About This Location

Muncie is an incorporated city in Delaware County, Indiana, about 60 miles northeast of Indianapolis that had a population of 70,000 as of 2010.

The Lenape (Delaware) people, who settled the area in the 1790s, founded several small villages including one known as Munsee Town that was renamed Muncietown and platted in 1827. The name was shortened to Muncie in 1845 and incorporated in 1865. The city grew as a manufacturing and industrial center, especially after the Gas Boom of the 1880s. Due to the Middletown studies (sociological research that began in the 1920s) Muncie is said to be among the most studied cities of its size in the US.
