About Playa Vista
Silicon Valley has nothing on Silicon Beach, the tech center of Southern California that's centered around the Playa Vista area of L.A. Historic home of the Hughes Aircraft Company, the Spruce Goose was built here; today, Playa Vista houses the corporate headquarters for Belkin, Team One and ICANN as well as a branch campus of Electronic Arts.
The Community of Playa Vista
The 1.3-square-mile Playa Vista neighborhood is a relatively new planned community that was developed in 2002 as a center for mixed-use living and business. It's been called "one of the most technologically advanced communities ever planned" and incorporates the newest telecommunications and broadband connectivity for both commercial and residential use.
The area is bounded by the Ballona Wetlands to the west and Ballona Creek to the north. The Del Rey Hills sit above the southern part of Playa Vista, Marina del Rey is to the west and Culver City is to the north and east. Loyola Marymount University is also to the south of Playa Vista.
What to Do in Playa Vista
Ballona Discovery Park brings the history of Ballona Wetlands to life for adults and children. Tour the native plant demonstration gardens, look for herons, ducks and egrets or go on the interpretive Watershed Walk that shows the path water takes to the nearby ocean. Regular activities and camps get kids excited about conservation and wildlife.
Shopping is tightly integrated into the community of Playa Vista. The Shops at Concert Park are a good example of how retail shops sit below living space and are in an enjoyable area to walk around and explore.
One Place You Shouldn't Miss in Playa Vista
Love animals? Stop by the Wallis Annenberg PetSpace, a state-of-the-art pet adoption center in Playa Vista. Your own pets are welcomed on the first floor play areas, while adoptable animals are housed on the second floor. Tour the facility and see how animals are cared for or bring your pup for an agility workshop or behavior training.
Dining in Playa Vista
Da Kikokiko brings the flavor of the islands to Southern California. Opened by Top Chef alumna Brooke Williamson, the restaurant features great fresh Poke, shaved ice and other Hawaiian classics in a fun setting. You can even get real Dole Whip here without a trip to Disney.
Rodini Park is a choose-your-own-meal eatery that lets you customize your food. Start with the decision of whether you want a salad, pita or platter, then pile on the meats (or meat alternatives like falafel), toppings and sauce. Greek baked goods are also on offer, and they'll even deliver to your residence or office.
