Learn About This Location
Mount Vernon is a charming community that melds the traditions of the past with the progress of the present, a city large enough to provide excellent service but small enough for neighbors to know each other's names.
Founded in 1805, by 1833, Mount Vernon had a court house, market, jail, three churches, thirteen dry goods stores, two groceries, two flouring mills, one carding machine and oil mill, two tinners' shops, five shoemakers' shops, one book store, one drug store, four taverns, 220 houses, and about 1200 inhabitants.
The town was a stop along the Cleveland, Akron and Columbus Railway between Cleveland, Orrville and Columbus. It is currently at the end of the line from Newark on the Ohio Central Railroad.
