About Yokosuka, Japan

Learn About This Location

Yokosuka is a city by the sea with a temperate climate and scenic beauty. The Miura Clan flourished in the Middle Ages and was essential in establishing the Kamakura Bakufu. About 150 years ago American Commodore Matthew Perry landed in Kurihama, leading to the construction of the Yokosuka Arsenal and subsequent development of the shipbuilding industry, a crucial aspect of Japan’s modernization.

Japan’s opening to the world was triggered by Commodore’s arrival, and so Yokosuka became Japan’s doorway to the world at large. Yokosuka City hopes to be known as the “International City of Culture by the Sea.”
