About Lafayette, Louisiana

Learn About This Location

Lafayette is a city on the Vermilion River in southwestern Louisiana. The city is the fourth-largest in the state, with a population of 120,623 as of 2010. Its nickname is The Hub City. Lafayette was originally founded as Vermilionville in 1821 by Jean Moutont, and later renamed after General Lafayette, who fought with the American Army during the Revolutionary War. The city's economy was primarily agrarian until the 1940s, when oil and gas became dominant. Lafayette is considered the center of Cajun and Creole culture in Louisiana, and started as such after the relocation of Acadians after their expulsion by the British from Canada in following France's defeat in the Seven Years' War.
