Billings was nicknamed the Magic City due to its rapid growth as a railroad town in March 1882. The city is named in honor of Frederick H. Billings, former president of the Northern Pacific Railroad. With one of the largest trade areas in the US, its the trade and distribution center for most of Montana, Northern Wyoming, and western North and South Dakota. With more hotels than any other area within the five-state region, Billings hosts a variety of conventions, concerts, and sporting events.
