Arlington is the second-largest principal city of the Washington DC metropolitan area. Arlington County is often referred to simply as "Arlington" or "Arlington, Virginia". In 2014, the county's population was estimated to be 230,300, which would make it the fourth-largest city in Virginia if it were to incorporate.

Because of it's close proximity to downtown Washington, D.C., Arlington is headquarters to many government departments and agencies , including the Department of Defense, Drug Enforcement Administration, Transportation Security Administration, and Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. The many federal agencies, government contractors, and service industries contribute to Arlington's economy. It is the highest-income county in the United States by median family income, although it has the highest concentration of singles in the region. Arlington is also the location of various national memorials, including the Arlington National Cemetery, the Pentagon Memorial, the Marine Corps War Memorial, and the US Air Force Memorial.
