Amsterdam is uniquely gezellig, a Dutch quality that corresponds roughly as convivial or comfy. It's more easily experienced than refined. There's a sense of time-stoppage, a comfortability with the here and now that leaves all your troubles behind, til tomorrow at least. You get that warm, fuzzy feeling all over, but the easiest place is a traditional brown café. So named for their wood paneled walls stained by smoke over centuries, browncafés practically have gezelligheid on tap, of course, with good beer.
