Alexandria is an independent city in Virginia. As of 2014, the population was estimated to be 150,575. Alexandria is approximately 7 miles south of downtown Washington, D.C.
Like the rest of Northern Virginia, modern Alexandria has been shaped by its proximity to the U.S. capital. It's largely populated by professionals in the civil service, in the military, or for one of the many private contrators. Alexandria's largest employer is the DOD, along with the Institute for Defense Analyses.
The historic center of Alexandria is referred to as Old Town. With its boutiques, restaurants, antique shops and theaters, it is a major draw for tourists. Like any Old Town, many neighborhoods are compact, walkable, and high-income suburbs of Washington, D.C.
